说起日月潭，有一个关于日月潭的传说：相传，远古时期，帮助大禹治完水的各路神仙都成群结队的回天庭，只有一对龙神夫妇，它们向往人间的安逸生活，就排在队伍的最后，趁其他神仙不注意，就又飞回人间，马上躲进一个无名潭，不久他们觉得肚子很饿，就到处去找食物，但是没找到，这时雄龙抬头死死地盯住准备落下的太阳，雌龙则盯住刚要升起的月亮，它们一起腾空飞去一口吞下了日月，刹那间，天地一片漆黑，什么都看不见了，双龙又飞回潭底，呼呼大睡去了。
有一对夫妇，男的叫大尖哥，女的叫水社姐，他们有除妖的金斧头和金剪刀，他们跳进卧龙的潭，把双龙都杀了，日月慢慢地升起来，而他们也献出了自己的生命，变成了大尖山和水社山，永远守护着这个潭，所以人们称这个潭为日月潭。
